Here is the textual matter of an Interview I did with the Single Wing Sentinel. The Lookout is a great resource for Single Wing managers as it show windows High School squads around the state that are running the Single Wing Offense.
10 Questions with Dave Cisar
Single Wing Sentinel: What drew you into coaching?
Dave Cisar: When I was growing up, the game taught me lessons that I used later in life in school and business. Had the game and coaching job not been there and those lessons not been taught, I doubt that I would have got enjoyed the success I did in those other areas.
I also attended respective young person football game games in assorted conferences in the country in the old age prior to getting involved. It was dismaying to see so many poorly coached squads and the deficiency of cardinal accomplishments as well as deficiency of quality sportsmanship from so many of the coaching job staffs. I knew many of these children were either going to discontinue playing the game or never larn the same things from the game that I did.
SSW: State me about your first twelvemonth as a coach. What were the results?
DC: A friend of mine had a boy playing and invited me to helper manager with him on an enlargement squad of all cub participants age 8-10. I was coaching job the offense and defensive dorsums on a staff of 5. I had very small input signal on the strategies or priorities, but that was fine, because I didn't have got the experience or cognition to do it work that first season. Most enlargement squads of all cub participants lost every game their first year, we won 3. The followers twelvemonth I was made caput manager of that squad and we went 11-0.
SSW: Why and how did you begin using the "Single-Wing"? What have got been the results?
DC: When I started my ain programme in inner-city Omaha in 1998, the Screaming Eagles. We had multiple squads in every age grouping and always coached one or two squads myself. We were playing in the best conference in the state. This highly competitory conference had squads in it that had won infinite "Unlimited Select" National Championships in Daytona Sunshine State .
This was an limitless weight conference with "running back" weights. Many of the squads selected their squads from over 200 kids, the residual acquire set on "B" squads. Players like Eric Crouch and Dave Rimington played in our conference the best of the best.
We just could not vie running our alkali "I" formation option football game and be competitory in this league. Nearly every squad was much larger and in most lawsuits faster than us as well. We had to do a alteration as our squads were not very successful in those early years. We needed a system that would let us to vie with fewer kids, littler children and less athletic kids.
My first twelvemonth running it was an age 8-10 squad of misfits that no 1 gave a opportunity to make very well. We had just one participant over 100 lbs. We went 11-0 and averaged over 30 points a game. The adjacent twelvemonth I took a "Select" age 8-10 squad and we went 11-0 and averaged about 40 points a game. My first 6 Single Wing squads went 62-2 in 5 different leagues, with a different squad every twelvemonth but one.
SSW: Why would a manager usage the single-wing?
DC: The manner we run it, it gives squads that make not have got size or Numbers a opportunity to compete. We always have got Numbers advantages at the point of onslaught with dual squad blocks and easy blocking angles. We draw linemen too, so that gives us other musculus at the point or onslaught and is merriment for the children as well.
The Single Wing is a squad offense, one that affects all the children and makes not trust on one he-man participant to transport the team. Last twelvemonth I had 12 different children hit touchdowns and my prima rusher have come up from 3 of the 4 different backfield places in the last 5 seasons. Unlike many offenses, you make not necessitate a he-man to transport the squad at certain positions.
It's deception, powerfulness and just merriment for the children and it wins games. Our surveys demo squads that consistently lose, lose players. It is the single greatest ground children discontinue playing young person football, because their squads are losing by large borders every week. The Single Wing assists us reserve players.
SSW: How would you depict your style of coaching?
DC: I'm very well organized and I pay attending to details, kind of a perfectionist. My end in coaching job is to acquire our squad and participants to play to their Supreme Being given potential, whatever that may be. So in kernel we are playing against ourselves, not the opponent. I've had squads that played awful and won 34-6 and I've had squads play great and lost 22-14. It's about playing to potential, the wins and losings will take attention of themselves.
I'm also there for the other team. I care about those children too, no demand to abash others or bend anyone away from the great game of football.
SSW: What are the hardest parts of coaching?
DC: Getting players, managers and parents to buy-in to playing to upper limit potential. Playing poorly or less than what you are capable and still winning is not a win in my book. Conversely playing well and to possible and losing is not a loss in my book either.
Having to step away from the Maha programme was difficult, but since we are 90 statute miles away we had no choice. Unfortunately without me holding the managers responsible for followers the system, those following it have got got got done very well, those that have not as expected have done poorly. As expected, the Numbers are down up there. Up until 2004 when I was there all the time, our squads dominated.
SSW: What is your doctrine about coaching?
DC: Play to potential, drama to win, manager all the children and drama all the kids. Honor the children that are listening and working difficult with more than playing time, but happen a clip and topographic point in the game for all the children to play.
Be perfect with an incorporate strategy that tantrums the grouping of children you acquire each year. Teach stone solid cardinal football game game and don't blow pattern clip with things that have got small if anything to make with football like cals, legerities or conditioning.
Delegate to helper coaches, duties they can handle. Coach up the managers and give them tools like elaborate parametric quantities and determination trees to do their occupation 1 they can have got success with. Rich Person merriment accomplishing your ends by being creative, you can often carry through your ends much easier if you are having fun. Be a function model, you are one if you are coaching job young person football. Be beyond reproach and pattern "overt" over the top sportsmanship that you can be proud of 10 old age after you hang up your whistle.
SSW: I cognize that you have got got completed a survey on successful and consistently mediocre young person football game programmes across the state - what were some of the things you learned from this research?
DC: That could have been a book on it's own. It was a intestine racking exercising in many ways, to see such as mediocre coaching job and seeing 100s of children getting turned off from football. From my concern calling I've always been able to larn what not to make from those at the bottom, the same was the lawsuit in young person football.
What I saw literally made me ill to my stomach. The consistent things I saw from the perennial losing programs: poorly organized practices, slow pace, tons of wasted time, tons of mindless non-football legerity drills, tons of conditioning, tons of calisthenics, tons of full scrimmaging, tons of different football game plays formations and stunts and tons of yelling. What I didn't see was: solid patterned advance taught fundamentals, attending on WHO to block, preciseness perfect football game game plays or any sort of incorporate offense or defensive schemes.
SSW: You wrote the highly acclaimed book "Winning Young Person Football", why?
DC: My ain programme in Maha expanded to over 400 children and I needed a manner to learn 70 asset new managers every twelvemonth how to manager young person football. The information was available to our managers in a reaper binder formatting along with the coaching job clinics I did for them.
It was my effort at helping managers aid kids. Poorly coached squads thrust children away from the game and if children are not playing, they can't larn the great lessons the game learns us about perseverance, dedication, difficult work, squad work and compassion. It was basically a measure by measure formula book for coaching job job a successful squad and showing you how to have got merriment while doing it.
I had sent out over 100 transcripts of the reaper binder free to managers on the cyberspace coaching forums when finally my married woman said, no more, it was costing us a bundle. When I allow managers cognize I couldn't afford to direct it out anymore, respective offered to purchase it along with my season games and my Single Wing Coaches Clinic Instructional DVD.
How we put the terms that first sale was by asking the purchaser how much he thought is was worth, and that was how we started. My married woman didn't have got any job with that expression and we were "in business". The reaper binder was then set into a more than readable friendly book formatting and we added a DVD on Practice Management and Game Day Management as well.
We acquire a batch of personal satisfaction from all the e-mails from managers that have got turned their losing programmes around by using the system. We usually acquire at least a twelve or so telephone phone calls every weekend from cats leaving messages about their up-to-the-minute win. Some of the messages are sort of merriment to listen to, the excited breathless pridefulness in the voices etc My married woman and I really bask hearing to those phone names together.
SSW: How can "Winning Young Person Football" aid a new or a seasoned coach?
DC: It is really a "Recipe" as Saint David Dimmond calls it for successful young person football game coaching. It is a measure by measure elaborate program that walkings you through coaching job a young person football game team. It includes all the electric drills we do, why we make them and walks you through them in painstaking item with image and diagrams, along with elaborate day-to-day pattern plans. It isn't downy theory or material written by person that coached 15 old age ago or have never coached young person football, it works today. I manager a squad or two every year, it's current.
Of course of study it includes our Single Wing Playbook, blocking strategies and accommodations as well as our defensive and particular squads schemes. The book includes how to pull off your parents, scout, strategically sub, do game twenty-four hours adjustments, how to choose participants for places as well as how to pull off your managers and do the experience merriment for the kids. For the experienced manager it is maybe a much different attack to the game that maybe you have got not considered or even seen.
In 266 pages it takes you through what it took me 15 old age to larn by trial, mistake and research. My thanks to all of those who have got helped me with this attempt including all the veteran soldier Single Wing Coaches on the Sir Alexander Robertus Todd Bross forum. ___________________________________
